January 22nd: Top Ten Settings I’d Like To See More Of (Or At All)
Oooo, this one was tough, but really fun to do as I considered some of my favorite books and how the settings might have contributed to how much I liked them.
And I used song lyrics because I’m in a musical-type mood.
1) Baby You Can Drive My Car
By which I mean I want characters to spend an inordinate amount of time in vehicles, by which I mean I want more roadtrip books, a la Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour or Saving June. I love the journey that happens in these books, and the car is therefore usually one of the necessary settings to get from location to location!
2) War! What Is It Good For?
And these have to be super well done, but war books hit me right in the feels when they’re done right. I’m thinking along the lines of The Book Thief or Code Name Verity here. MAN THE CANNONS AND GRAB THE TISSUES.
3) Paris Holds The Key to Her Heart
Really, though… how much more of a swoony locale could you ask for. Anna and the French Kiss, anyone?
4) When In Rome
I’m sure there are plenty of novels out there with Italy as the setting, but none come to mind! So, that means there must be a particular need for it!
5) Gotta Get Back to Hogwarts!
But I only want this to be written by you if your name is J.K. Rowling. In which case… c’mon JKR. You know you want to write that prequel, post-grad, or next gen novel…
6) London Calling
Because I enjoy hearing the lilt of a lovely British accent in my head as I imagine character voices, even if it’s not in the voices of the main characters and sort of “setting” characters instead, as was the case in Meant to Be.
7) Speakeasy, drink easy, pull easy
Give me more flappers, speakeasies, and Roaring Twenties novels, like The Diviners, please and thank you.
8) Come on everybody to the boarding school
I don’t know why I find a boarding school so fascinating. Maybe it has to do with the fact that if you don’t get along with your classmates, TOO BAD, YOU LIVE WITH THEM. (The dramz!) Or that I imagine some cases of having a pseudo family with other students and teachers since you’re away from your actual family. Despite not knowing why I want it, I do know that I want more boarding school settings, like in The Name of The Star or Out of Sight, Out of Time.
9) Walking through the terminal, I saw something beautiful
I doubt that anyone could do it as much justice as Jennifer E. Smith did in The Statistical Probability of First Sight, but I thought the airport and plane were really interesting settings and wouldn’t mind some more of them!
10) You Be The Prince and I’ll be the Princess
Basically I want court and intrigue and nobility. It doesn’t have to be princes and princesses and I don’t care if it’s fantasy court of historical, but yes. I tend to enjoy the courtly aspect in novels. And I have far too many examples of such books to possibly list.
(The books are the stories, baby just say yessss)
