Goodreads summary:

Can Cameron find what he’s looking for?

All 16-year-old Cameron wants is to get through high school—and life in general—with a minimum of effort. It’s not a lot to ask. But that’s before he’s given some bad news: he’s sick and he’s going to die. Which totally sucks. Hope arrives in the winged form of Dulcie, a loopy punk angel/possible hallucination with a bad sugar habit. She tells Cam there is a cure—if he’s willing to go in search of it. With the help of a death-obsessed, video-gaming dwarf and a yard gnome, Cam sets off on the mother of all road trips through a twisted America into the heart of what matters most.

Review:

Cameron can’t figure out what’s wrong with him. Neither can his parents. They raised him to be as motivated and normalized as his twin sister, you see. But Cameron is a slacker, a C average student. And lately strange things have been happening to him. Like spasms and hallucinations.

Cameron finds out that he has Mad Cow Disease and unfortunately does not have much longer to live. While in the hospital, he is tasked by an angel named Dulcie with a mission that, if completed, could save not only Cameron’s life, but the entire universe.

The adventure is so twisted and hilarious, and much like Beauty Queens, which I read first, has various snarks at modern society. Several times I actually snorted out loud.

But the way that it’s crafted with Cameron’s illness means that we’renever quite sure that it’s even happening. That may work for some people but I needed something a little more concrete to hold on to and I didn’t get that even with the ending.

Still, Going Bovine was an enjoyable read and very funny.

Rating: 3.5/5. This book was very funny and I was definitely entertained for the duration.
